Felipe Massa’s annual karting event, The Challenge of the Stars, took place at Beto Carrero World in Santa Catarina on January 12th. Many current and former F1 stars were in attendance, including Jules Bianchi, Rubens Barrichello, and Bruno Senna, to name a few. But it was all Tonio Liuzzi from the start:
Tonio Liuzzi claimed victory in Felipe Massa’s annual International Challenge of the Stars karting event.
The former Formula 1 driver dominated the charity contest from start to finish, topping all practice sessions before converting pole position to a race win, ahead of Sebastien Buemi and Massa.
While Liuzzi enjoyed a trouble-free race his rivals were embroiled in battles throughout the field.
Audi LMP1 driver Lucas di Grassi kept him honest during the opening phase of the race, with Brazilian Stock Car racer Julio Campos also in hot pursuit.
But as di Grassi and Campos tussled, Liuzzi was able to build a comfortable gap out front, while Massa and Buemi scythed their way through the field to join the scrap for second and third.
After pulling off several overtaking manoeuvres, it was the Toyota driver who prevailed, claiming the runner-up position as well as the fastest lap of the race.
Massa took the final podium spot ahead of Campos, with Brazilian racers Antonio Pizzonia, Daniel Serra and Nelson Piquet Jr coming home in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The star-studded entry also featured former F1 driver Rubens Barrichello, GP2′s Felipe Nasr and Aston Martin GTE racer Bruno Senna.
